By taking good care of themselves, most people can control their autoimmune disorders successfully and live normal, happy lives.

An autoimmune disorder occurs when a person's immune system creates antibodies that attack his or her own body. Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and many thyroid problems are the results of autoimmune disorders. Although there is presently no cure for autoimmune disorders, there are steps that you can take to alleviate your symptoms and avoid triggering attacks. Learn about ways decrease the risks of experiencing problems with autoimmune disorders.

      Even if your face is covered, apply sunblock to make sure you do not get a sunburn

      Avoid sunlight. When you are outside, be sure that you wear sunblock and loose-fitting clothes that cover your arms and legs. You may also choose to wear a sun hat, a hat with a large brim that blocks the sun from the face and shoulders, or sunglasses. Do not sunbathe or tan in an indoor bed.

      Avoid alcohol and tobacco. Studies have shown that drinking and smoking, even in moderation, can trigger autoimmune disorders. If you currently drink or smoke regularly or occasionally, you should eliminate these habits.

      Many people have a special place that they go to relax. Picturing this place can help calm you when you are experiencing stress.

      Stay calm. Mental and physical stress can trigger an autoimmune disorder. Designate a place where you can go to take a few deep breaths and relax when things get too hectic at work or at home. Focus on inhaling and exhaling deeply and calming your heart rate when you become excited or upset. In the case of autoimmune disorders, working too hard can literally make you sick, so be sure that you set some firm times each week that you are "off," during which you do not think about or become involved in work-related problems.

      If two heads are better than one, a support group has to be the best.

      Join a support group. Having others around you who have experienced this type of health problem can help you stay strong as you deal with an autoimmune disorder. They may have suggestions about ways to avoid triggers and also additional knowledge about medical treatments and advances.

      Eat healthy foods. For people trying to avoid triggering an autoimmune disorder, nutritionists recommend lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, brown rice, low-fat dairy products, fish and poultry.

      Exercise daily. Daily exercise can reduce stress as well as keeping you fit and healthy. People in better physical shape are less likely to experience difficulties with autoimmune disorders.
