Step 1
Arrange obstacle courses outside or in your basement, it doesn't matter. Develop obstacles that are developmentally appropriate for your child. For young children try a homemade balance beam with stuffed animal sharks laying beside it waiting to gobble children up. Try a simple obstacle of climbing over a large chair and then making a couple of baskets on a children's sized basketball hoop.

Step 2
Add some art! Pardon the pun, but art is becoming a "lost art form." At the birthday party have an art station. Cover a table and floor with disposable table clothes, cover the the tables with art supplies and let the children create. If your party is thematic you can create a craft, for example create a super hero masks for superhero party. If you are less creative or are just too busy, don't be afraid to let children create whatever their imaginative little minds want to create. Don't go over board on buying new items, it can be as simple as crayons, paper, scissors, and glue sticks.

Step 3
Make a homemade pinata; it's a hit every single time! Children love beating the pinata and they love the prizes that come out even more. Keep the prizes inexpensive because children just enjoy the creation and destruction of the pinata.
-
Step 4
Have a treasure hunt, children love to search for prizes. Draw a quick map of the area where the party is being held. Make enough copies of the map for each family. Now hide a simple treasure in different spots in the area. Add to each map an X to mark the spot to lead families to their individual treasure.

Step 5
Give children a treat bag on the way out the door. Giving them their treats on the way out allows parents to say, "No more candy today" and it ensures that each child gets home with their gifts. Fruit snacks are great for your treat bags; they come in all themes these days. It is also great to include some simple toys.
