Things You'll Need:
- Heavy coat hangers
- Vacuum packed storage bags
-
Step 1
Eliminate. If you have not worn a particular coat or jacket in a year or more, donate it. There are too many people who spend their winters without a coat. If you live in a tropical climate, there is really no need for you to have a closet full of heavy winter coats. Keep one or two and get rid of the rest.
-
Step 2
Store properly. If you have a dress coat that is only worn on special occasions or if you have a bulky ski jacket that you only wear on your annual ski trip, store them in a vacuum-packed bag. The coats will shrink down to a flat parcel and can be stored either in the back of the closet or even under the bed.
-
Step 3
Use proper hangers. When hanging coats into your small coat closet, hang them on sturdy wooden coat hangers. Your coats will hang better and not get so mashed. These hangers will also eliminate the problem of coats sliding off and falling to the floor.
-
Step 4
Hang coats accordingly. If you are in the middle of a very cold winter season, hang your heavy coat in an easy to reach location. After winter is over, move that heavy coat to the back or store it in a vacuum packed bag. Keep light jackets and raincoats in an easy to reach location, beside your heavy winter coat.

Step 5
Cater to your child. If you have children, hang their most frequently used coat or jacket on a hook in their room. It is easier for them to get their coat if they do not have to wait for you to get it off of the hanger in the closet. When they cannot reach as high as the hangers, they will attempt to pull the coat down, possibly creating a mess of falling coats.
