Changing your name to your husband's when you are married, as a woman, is the traditional thing to do. It is still a personal choice, and one that many choose not to do in today's day and age. However, if you decide to change your name when you get married, there are many steps to doing so.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Original marriage license
  • Copies of marriage license
  1. Step 1

Take the time to photocopy at least 8 to12 copies of your marriage license. If you have the money, order certified copies of your license, as well. There are many agencies who will not work with you until they see or have the original marriage license.

  2. Step 2

Your first stop will probably be at the motor vehicle office. You will want to get a new copy of your driver’s license with your correct name ASAP, as this is your main form of identification. Bring along your marriage license and check beforehand to see if there are other documents you may need.

  3. Step 3

You will need your Social Security information updated as quickly as possible, as well. Call your local office to request forms to change your name, or check their website (see Resources) to see what can be done online. New social security cards do not usually require a fee to receive.

  4. Step 4

If you travel frequently and use a passport, make sure you fill out all the necessary information on changing your name. Call your local passport office to find the steps needed to change your name.

  5. Step 5

Names on your bills and other related documents will need to be changed, too. Many bills nowadays have a space available for a name change. If not; you can call and talk to someone who can update the system with your new name. Typically, these kinds of transactions do not need any proof, such as your marriage license.

  6. Step 6

If you are working, make sure to let your employer know right away of the name change. You will want your check to have the proper name on it when you go to cash it.

  7. Step 7

Contact everyone you deal with and inform them of the change. If you are a student, let your school know of the change. If you have kids in school, alert the secretary of his or her school.

  8. Step 8

Make sure to update any and all insurance and vehicle documents with your correct name. This goes for your bank loan, if applicable, registration and insurance. Your bank will also need to be made aware of the new name, as you will want to have new checks printed and a new debit card issued.

  9. Step 9

If you rent or own, contact your landlord or real estate agent to advise them of the name change.

  10. Step 10

To tell family and friends, you can have fun with sending out name-change cards in the mail to let everyone know that you are newly married, as well as give them your new name.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be prepared to update your information for a long time. There will always be some place that has your maiden name.
