Many people run to the doctor for help with vaginal itching, but these simple herbal remedies could prove safer, cheaper and more effective. Vaginal itching is generally caused by yeast infections, which primarily afflict women of child-bearing age. According to medical statistics, between 70% to 80% of the infections are caused by an overgrowth of yeast called Candida Albicans. This naturally occurring yeast is normally kept under control by another naturally-occurring organism, Lactobacillus acidophilus. Imbalances can occur for a variety of reasons, including: hormonal changes, antibiotic use, soaps, semen, tight clothing. A yeast infection, formally termed Candidiasis, is usually characterized by the presence of white or whitish-grey curd-like material around the vagina, along with a foul smell, itching and burning. Doctors diagnose Candidiasis by scraping off a few cells and examining them under a microscope. If you are fairly certain you have Candidiasis, there are several natural remedies involve substances you can try, both internally and externally. All of them are extremely safe, as they are either foods or safe herbs.

How to Soothe Vaginal Itching With Natural Remedies

  1. Step 1

A few external remedies include: Apple cider vinegar, watered down slightly, with a little crushed garlic mixed it, can be dabbed onto the vagina. If you experience too much stinging, simply rinse with clear water. (This remedy is my personal favorite, as apple cider vinegar is cheap and we use it regularly in cooking).

  2. Step 2

Wipe yogurt onto the area, or dip a tampon into yogurt and keep it in the vagina for about an hour.Tea tree oil: Coat a tampon with KY jelly, and add a drop or two of tea tree oil; insert into vagina.

  3. Step 3

Herbal douche: combine equal parts sage, raspberry leaf or comfrey, and mullien, with a quarter part goldenseal. Make a tea with 4 t. mixture to a quart of water. Remove herbs, let cool to at least body temperature, add 2 T apple cider vinegar and 1/4 c. yogurt. Douche every other day, or every day for more severe infections. Boric acid: Fill two 00-sized capsules, insert into vagina, and wait for capsules to dissolve. (This is a strong treatment, effective in treating severe and persistent cases).

  4. Step 4

Internal remedies include:Drink at least two glasses of buttermilk a day.Take olive leave extract. This is available in pill form from several online companies and at health food stores.Take slippery elm, known for healing body tissues that have mucous membranes.

  5. Step 5

Grapefruit seed extract can be mixed with or taken along with the olive leaf extract.Pure cranberry juice, two 8-oz. glasses per day. If you can't stand the tartness, then buy cranberry pills.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you get the infection under control, understanding how your infection occurred is key to preventing it from happening again.
  • Cut down or stop completely your consumption of sugar and non-organic, antibiotic-laden meats.
  • Do not use baking soda. It will raise the pH of your vagina, making the microorganisms happier.
  • Do not use goldenseal, as it will create a severe burning sensation.
  • Feel free to combine two or three remedies at once.
  • If you tried two or three of these natural remedies and they do not help after two weeks, consult your doctor.
