Whether you are putting together a session to record your voice or want to record a CD for your band, one of the best ways to start is by using the software program Pro Tools. Understanding how to set up a recording session with this software will allow you to put all of your tracks into the right place.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pro Tools
  • Mixer
  • Microphone or instrument
  • computer
  1. Step 1

Start a new session in Pro Tools. Every set up should begin with a new session that will allow you to alter all of the details in the way that you want.

  2. Step 2

Decide on how many bits you need. The bits will allow you to have the right amount of sound when you record and is usually divided with 16, 24 or 36 bits. For example, if you are just recording your voice, you can choose 16 bits because you won't need as much room. For a larger set of sounds, such as a band, you might want to choose 36 bits.

  3. Step 3

Put everything on the right drive. Most recording artists recommend having a separate hard drive to save all of your recordings so that they are not lost. If you set this up in the beginning, you can guarantee that your work will be saved.

  4. Step 4

Start a recording session. This will automatically let you set up the tracks as soon as you move into Pro Tools. At this point, you can decide how many tracks you want to record and can prepare for your mix. If you don't put in enough, you can always change it later.

  5. Step 5

Set up the instruments, microphone or sounds. In order to get the sounds into Pro Tools, you will need to make sure that the instrumentation is set to record the right way. This means you will need to check the volume through a mixing board to make sure that it doesn't peak, or go too high, and will want to make sure that everything is balanced in each of the tracks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your time to set everything up in Pro Tools. Doing this before you record will save you time and space on the computer.
