What is a cairn? A cairn is a deliberately constructed pile of stone and rock. It must be built one stone at a time. A cairn will be a unique creation of its builders making its construction a sacred experience. Most people think of cairns in relation to the Irish but cairns have been used by humans in the northeastern United States for over 5,000 years ago and continue to be used today.

Instructions

  1. How to Build a Cairn

    • 1

The beauty of making your own cairn or nature altar is that it can blend in with the natural surroundings. It is uniquely infused with the energy of the materials and its creator.

    • 2

Choose a flat, dry, area preferably in a secluded area. Traditional cairns were often on hilltops but that is not specifically required.

    • 3

Select a few large, flat, roughly circular stone to act as the base of the cairn.

    • 4

Build up a tapering dome by layering smaller flat rocks in an overlapping pattern.

    • 5

While constructing the cairn focus your thoughts on honoring the creation. Work slowly and methodically so that the stones are balanced and able to support the growing weight.

    • 6

Making a cairn takes time and patience. It isn’t necessary to finish the cairn in one day. When the cairn is finished decorate it with things found in the surrounding environment. Flowers, ivy, and interesting pieces of wood are all great elements to include in your decorations.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do attempt to build a cairn while feeling negative emotions.

  • Gather you materials and get a feel for them before you begin the building.

  • Make sure the stones are well balanced to avoid them falling over on yourself.

  • When visiting your cairn later be wary of animals that may have made it there home.

It worked out well for me. I used it for the original reason to put a loved one to rest, my first dog, and so far nothing's happened to it.
