Win in Flag Football

Flag football is a great, challenging game of speedy action, athleticism, and high scoring games. For those more familiar with regulation football, however, flag football can also be a frustrating game because it is often played with much less discipline and its players often have a far less serious outlook about the game and winning. With preparation, though, your flag football team can become unstoppable in most recreational leagues. Read on to learn how to win in flag football.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Desire
  • Good teammates
  • Athleticism
  1. Step 1

First of all, set up team practices on at least a once-a-week basis. This is a crucial part of becoming a truly good flag football team and winning the majority of your games. If you don't have practices then no team chemistry can develop.

  2. Step 2

Set up a real playbook. Teams that try to simply run the same "run-and-gun" style of offense on every play often meet with little success. It's also hard to come up with plays on the fly during the middle of the game. So, establish a playbook of 10 to 20 separate plays and have everyone learn it inside and out.

  3. Step 3

Wear the right gear. Don't come to flag football wearing tennis shoes and uncomfortable clothing. Wear athletic gear, cleats, and all of the other things you need to have a true chance at winning your flag football game.

  4. Step 4

Learn the rules. Many people aren't as familiar with the rules of flag football as they are with the rules of NCAA football or the NFL. Therefore, it's a good idea to have a team meeting and discuss the major rule differences between flag football and normal football.

  5. Step 5

Don't get caught up in the passing game. Passing the football in flag football is more risky than running run plays, and it's usually much safer to simply run on most of your downs and then throw the ball deep to score quick points once the defense begins to anticipate the run.

Tips & Warnings
  • * Remember, team unity is key. If it's necessary, appoint a team captain or have a coach to make sure things run smoothly.
  • * Always wear appropriate protective gear for the sport in which you're participating.
