How to Play Straight Bass Lines

The bass line is the foundation that many songs are built on. The bass player must play the notes that anchor the chords while driving the song forward rhythmically.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Learn the chord structure of the song you will play.

  2. Step 2

    Play the bass note of each chord in the song.

  3. Step 3

    Now play the bass note of each chord in a simple rhythmic pattern. Start with only a few notes per measure. Repeat the pattern in each measure of the song.

  4. Step 4

    As your knowledge of the instrument and your confidence increases try playing other notes in the chords. You can also play more complicated rhythms.

  • Make sure you are comfortable when you're playing.
  • Maintain good posture.
  • Listen to the drummer and try to mesh your playing with his.
  • Keep practicing.
