How to Identify Symptoms of Botulism Poisoning

Botulism is a very serious form of food poisoning that may be caused by toxin-tainted food. Such toxins affect the nervous and muscular systems of the body. This type of food poisoning affects all age groups, as well as both females and males. The bacteria involved, called Clostridium botulinum, is generally the cause of toxins found in raw, improperly cooked or contaminated foods.

Instructions

    • 1

Botulism affects both the central nervous and muscular systems and may initially affect the eyes, causing blurred or double vision and even a drooping of the eyelids.

    • 2

Symptoms of dry mouth and slurred speech are also common in botulism food poisoning. Some people accidentally swallow their tongue, so care must be taken to monitor those experiencing these signs or symptoms. People affected by botulism poisoning may also experience difficulty swallowing liquids or foods.

Vomiting and diarrhea are also experienced in botulism poisoning. If prolonged, such symptoms may also lead to weakness in the arms and legs. Severe dehydration also results from prolonged diarrhea, so try to encourage liquids.

    • 4

People suffering from botulism poisoning generally maintain their cognitive abilities and don't experience fevers or chills. In this way, botulism food poisoning differs from signs and symptoms accompanied by the flu or other viruses.

Tips & Warnings

  • Symptoms of botulism toxin poisoning may appear suddenly (usually withing 1 or 2 days of ingesting tainted food) but may also occur within hours of eating.

  • Botulism food poisoning requires hospital care and treatment. Avoid self-diagnosing and self-treating. When experiencing any of the above symptoms, seek medical help. Tests will be able to confirm diagnosis.
