Self-defense is a valuable tool in protecting your life in the event of an attack. Most of us will probably never need to use any self-defense methods, but it is still a good idea to learn how to use them just in case you are ever in a situation in which you need to protect your life. These techniques will teach you how to defend yourself against an overhead stabbing attack in which the attacker is stabbing at you in a downward motion.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Always avoid the attack if at all possible. If you can get away without engaging your attacker, then absolutely do so. Evading the assault is your best option when feasible.

  2. Step 2

If escaping is not an option, as the attacker steps towards you and begins to lower the knife towards your body, step back with your right foot and dodge the blade.

  3. Step 3

As you step back on your right foot, grab the wrist of the hand the attacker is using to wield the knife with both your hands.

  4. Step 4

Now step forward into your attacker with your right foot and use your right knee to knee the attacker in the groin, being careful not to loose your balance and footing.

  5. Step 5

After you knee the attacker, spin into the attacker while still maintaining your grip on the arm to bring the arm over your right shoulder with your back turned into the attacker.

  6. Step 6

If the attacker has not dropped the knife, you must apply enough pressure pulling downwards and using your shoulder as a base to break the arm or dislocate the shoulder.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is not a good idea to engage your attacker unless you are trained in the art of self-defense. Running away is always the best defense from a stabbing assault.
