These steps explain how to properly install a hollow drywall anchor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Be sure to choose the right type of drywall anchor for what you are hanging. There are many different types of drywall anchors. A hollow wall anchor is best for medium-weight objects like pictures and smaller mirrors.

  2. Step 2

Select the spot you want to place the anchor, and drill a hole slightly larger than the anchor.

  3. Step 3

Slide the hollow wall anchor into the hole you drilled.

  4. Step 4

Insert the screw into the wall anchor.

  5. Step 5

While holding onto the edge of the anchor, turn the screw into it. You will feel when the anchor flares open behind the wall.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always mark the wall with a pencil before drilling holes.
  • Laser levels are great for marking where you want to hang things like pictures, mirrors and art on your walls.
  • Once you install a drywall anchor, it is not very easy to remove. The best ways to get rid of them involve cutting the head off or tapping it into the wall, then spackling over. Because of this, make sure you put them exactly where you want them the first time. Measure, mark, measure again!
