One of the easiest ways to make fine edges on a piece of wood is to use profile router bits. These bits come in a variety of profiles, and some require setting up a guide. Some of the bits have a ball-bearing wheel that allows the router to use the edge of the wood as a guide.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Router
  • Bits
  • Safety glasses
  1. Step 1

Insert the bit into the router and tighten.

Adjust the height of the router plate to the desired profile.

  3. Step 3

Measure from the edge of the bit shank to the edge of the plate.

  4. Step 4

Set the guide at the measurement taken in step 3.

  5. Step 5

Start the router and place it against the guide. Move the router in the opposite direction of the router motor.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not move too fast since this may cause splintering of the edge.
  • Always wear safety glasses.
  • Operating the router from the wrong direction may cause damage to your project. Test the direction on scrap wood.
