A glass of wine contains a complex serious of flavors and aromas. The following article discusses which aromas fall under the caramel category in wines.

    Understand that if a glass of wine has a burnt sugar, maple, butterscotch, or brown sugar aroma, it is said to have a caramel aroma. These are the most obvious of aromas in the caramel category.

    If a wine has a chocolate aroma, it also falls into the caramel category. Many people do not think about being able to smell chocolate in wine. However, a chocolate aroma in red wine is rather common.

    Soy sauce
    Soy sauce

    Realize that soy sauce is also used as a descriptor for a caramel aroma in wine. Soy sauce can be smelled most often in a hearty red wine but can also be smelled in a sparkling or white wine.

    Sample a variety of wines to refine your palette to the intricacies of wine aromas.

  • Some estimate that there are about 800 compounds in wine. Many of these compounds contribute to the aroma of wine.
  • The caramel aroma in wine is often fleeting but it can add to your overall enjoyment.
  • A sensitive or powerful sense of smell is no guarantee of being a good wine evaluator. Studies has shown that implied that ,even with experience and practice, many people could identify only about one and two dozen aromas at a time without error.
