Things You'll Need:

  • Whistle
  1. Step 1

A pushing foul occurs when a player pushes or bumps an opposing player to move them out of position. This can often occur when trying to get in position for a rebound or when on defense, when you are trying to guard an opponent. It is important to note that not all contact is a foul. Basketball is a physical game and there will be contact.

  2. Step 2

Making the call. When you spot a pushing foul, the referee needs to blow the play dead to make the call.

Immediately after the whistle is blown, you have to make the appropriate hand signal to identify the call you made. In the case of a pushing foul, you bring your arms in to your chest. Your wrists should be straight with your elbows pointing towards the floor and the palms of your hands should be facing outwards. You then thrust your arms outward in a pushing motion, keeping your palms facing outwards. Here is an illustration of what the hand signal of a pushing foul looks like.
