Learn how to reduce muscle strain and improve airflow for better playing when you know how to hold a concert tuba.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Chair
  • Concert tuba
  • Pillow
  • Small footstool

How to Hold a Concert Tuba

Step1
Take the tuba out of its case and sit in a chair with your legs in an open "v" shape. The small of your back should be pressed against the chair back, your bottom as far back against the chair as possible, and your posture straight.
Step2
Place the base of the concert tuba toward the front of the seat, squarely between your thighs. If you are very tall, placing the base of the tuba on a small pillow with a waterproof covering may help to elevate the tuba mouthpiece to your mouth.
Step3
Place your right foot on a footstool with the sole of your foot firmly on the footstool. This can ease back strain and help you to play better.
Step4
Tilt the tuba slightly to the left to play properly if you feel too short or uncomfortable with the way you are holding it.
Step5
Wrap your left hand around the top tubing, while the right thumb goes through the loop and the fingers rest on the valves.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are using a small pillow to elevate the tuba, be careful when emptying the spit valve.
