Overcoming a panic attack can seem like a daunting task, but armed with the right approach you can make them less emotionally devastating. Knowledge is power when it comes to getting through a panic attack. Learn to identify your triggers and you will have a better chance of dealing with anxiety. There are many things you can use to help you get through a panic attack. Try any and all of them until you feel that you have come to the right combination.

  • Anything to distract yourself such as:
  • Telephone
  • Family Member/Friend
  • Rubber Band
  • Something to drink/eat
  • Pets
  • Hobbies
  • Music

    Recognize the Symptons and Distract Yourself

  1. Step 1

    Recognizing the symptoms of a panic attack is the first step to getting through them. Your first response to a panic attack is generally flight. If you are out in a public place, locate a quiet area to calm yourself down.

  2. Step 2

    Distract yourself by any means necessary. If you are with other people, engage in conversation. Tell a joke or ask somebody to tell you a humorous story. If you have nobody around and access to a phone, call a friend or family member. Get yourself something to drink or to snack on.

  3. Step 3

    Continue to concentrate your energy on something else. The more you focus on the panic attack, the more power you will give it. Take a walk if you're able, perhaps with a pet or friend. Dance or sing to your favorite song.

  4. Step 4

    Meditation can also help to calm your nerves while you are experiencing a panic attack. Yoga and Pilate's are also good exercises to help you work through your anxiety

  5. Step 5

    Seek medical attention if you feel you are in need. Call a physician or therapist.
