  1. Step 1

    In basketball, once a player stops dribbling, he or she is is not allowed to resume unless an opposing player touches the basketball. When a player stops dribbiling and then tries to resume it, a double-dribble violation has occurred. A double-dribble also occurs when a player attempts to dribble the ball with both hands at the same time.

  2. Step 2

    Making the call.When you spot a double dribble violation, a referee needs to blow the play dead to make the call.

    Immediately after the whistle is blown, the referee has to make the appropriate hand signal. In the case of a double-dribble violation, the ref moves his hands up and down in a dribbling motion. The palms his hands should be facing the sky and should not be parallel to each other. Here is an illustration of what the hand signal for a double dribble call looks like.
