Step 1
In practicing preventative dentistry, many times what you don't do is just as important and what you do. Avoiding bad habits or breaking them can help keep your teeth and gums healthy. One of the worst things a person can do for their dental health is smoke. Smoking leaves stains on the teeth that are next to impossible to remove with regular brushing. As smoke is inhaled, it can penetrate into the natural grooves of the teeth. Stains that are left can only be removed by quite invasive dental cleaning. Avoid smoking and you will avoid all of these problems.

Step 2
Many of us love to indulge in drinking red wine. If you have ever spilled a drop or two on your clothing or furniture then you likely know how difficult it is to remove. Imagine what this is doing to your teeth. Red wine is one of the worst offenders for teeth staining. An occasional indulgence is fine but these deposits will build up quite quickly. If possible, brush after drinking. This will help to remove the red wine deposits before they can stain too terribly.

Step 3
You may be surprised to hear this but regular exercise can help with dental health. Stress and anxiety contribute to the amount of plaque and bacteria in the mouth. Regular exercise helps to reduce the amount of stress, therefore reducing the plaque and bacteria. This will reduce staining and cavities.

Step 4
Many of us were told as children that chewing gum was bad for the teeth. Well, this isn't 100 percent true. Chewing sugarless gum can actually help to clean the teeth. The act of chewing helps to release saliva in the mouth. Saliva is a natural rinsing agent that helps to flush the teeth and gums of impurities. As long as you chew sugarless gum, you are actually doing your teeth a huge favor.

Step 5
Enough cannot be said for practicing good oral hygiene. Your teeth should be brushed a minimum of twice a day. Regular flossing and dental check-ups are also essential. Most dentists recommend a rotating toothbrush for maximum cleaning. However, those with sensitive teeth may prefer the standard model. If a rotating toothbrush isn't for you then make sure you change your brush regularly.
