How to Wrap a Dislocated Shoulder

Dislocating a shoulder is extremely painful. The quicker you respond and treat your injury, the quicker your pain will subside and your shoulder will heal. Knowing how to wrap a dislocated shoulder is crucial if you are active in sports. If you have had previous shoulder dislocations, it is bound to happen again. Perhaps this is why it's so important to learn how to wrap your own shoulder.

Things You'll Need

• Triangular bandage
• Ace wrap
• Shirt

Instructions

1. Make a sling from your triangular bandage. Put the 90 percent angle of the triangle under your elbow; cross the ends behind your neck.

2. Tie the ends behind your neck. Make sure your wrist is slightly higher than your elbow. A square knot usually works best.

3. Tie the excess fabric behind your elbow into a knot. This will keep your elbow in place and prevent your arm from falling out of the sling.

4. Place a shirt between your body and your arm. Usually a dislocated shoulder causes your elbow to be about 6 inches away from your body.

5. Wrap an ace wrap around your chest. Include the sling above your arm in the wrap. This will bind your sling to your body preventing movement.

Tips & Warnings

• Usually your shoulder should be immobilized and in the sling for about 3 weeks.
