    Steps to Learning Kayaking Safety

  1. Step 1

Take safety classes. These classes can teach you the basic things you'll need to know to avoid impact injuries and keep yourself safe throughout your adventures. Most kayak shops offer safety courses that will usually include a couple hour crash course so you can get to the water. There are also a number of kayak safety courses on the Internet that offer knowledge in avoiding impact injuries while kayaking at your favorite locations.

  2. Step 2

Avoid rough water and stay clear of the sides of rivers when kayaking through them. Stay in the middle as much as possible, and when you see turns ahead, stay to the outer side of the turn. Most importantly, if you do get stuck in a situation that's hairy, go with the flow. Don't fight the current as this can most certainly result in an impact injury.

  3. Step 3

Hire a tour guide the first couple of times and adventure is taken. You can find guides at kayak shops and in the yellow pages, on the Internet or through word of mouth. Asking friends and family for recommendations is a great way to find a guide that you like.

  4. Step 4

Wear safety gear when kayaking to avoid impact injuries. This gear should include a life jacket, knee pads, elbow pads and a protective helmet.

  5. Step 5

Be cautious and aware at all times. Prevent an accident and injury before it happens.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always keep a cell phone on you.
  • Notify someone of your whereabouts before going out.
  • Never kayak alone.
