Snowboarding might be the most fun you'll ever have. But you've got to know how to get onto the ski lift if you're ever going to get up the mountain. Here is the correct way to get onto a ski lift.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A snowboard

    Getting a Ride

  1. Step 1

Stop and unstrap your back leg from your snowboard to navigate the ski lift line. Walk your way to the lift, sliding on your board with your front foot and walking with your back foot.

  2. Step 2

Once you are at the front of the line and the group in front of you has gone, move forward and get into position. It is very important that you get out into position as soon as possible--you will avoid potential mishaps this way.

  3. Step 3

Turn your body completely sideways to see the lift. Unlike skiers who can wait and relax a bit, snowboarders need to literally turn sideways (almost all the way around) in order to see the lift and time it correctly. Make sure the nose of your board is still pointing forward.

  4. Step 4

Sit down--sideways at first (just like the way you are standing)--when the chair arrives. Keep your board flat on the snow and make sure to straighten your back leg so your loose foot doesn't get caught under the chair. Only when the lift raises up into the air should sit firmly on your behind and turn your board sideways. Doing so too early may result in you catching your board on the ground and getting yanked underneath the lift.

  5. Step 5

    Enjoy the ride!

Tips & Warnings
  • It's very important to turn all the way sideways when you are waiting for the ski lift. This is the best way to see the chair coming, time sitting down, and keep your board in the correct position for the lift off.
  • The chair will come to you, so be patient and wait for the right moment to sit down onto it
  • Many problems can arise if you are late to the pick-up area, so be ready to go as soon as the group before you steps out.
