How to Become an Anusara Yoga Instructor

It is difficult for most Anusara yoga instructors to identify the exact day and place that they began envisioning themselves no longer as a student of Anusara yoga, but rather as the teacher. Maybe you took a class and admired your own teacher’s devotion. You may have been practicing Anusara yoga on your own for years and suddenly desired to share your love of yoga. Regardless of when it began the desire is now there and you want to teach Anusara yoga.

    How to become an Anusara Yoga Instructor

  1. Step 1

    Get an experienced Anusara yoga teacher to mentor you. Express your desire to teach and ask the teacher for advice. If it would be best if you could apprentice under the teacher and if you are willing to work under the teacher it might be beneficial to both of you.

  2. Step 2

    Develop the skills that will assist you in being an effective Anusara yoga teacher. This includes studying and understanding the philosophy of Anusara yoga.

  3. Step 3

    Learn the Anusara vocabulary. Just like any other occupation you should understand the vocabulary of the profession and us it correctly.

  4. Step 4

    Learn the Anusara poses. You should also know the fifty common yoga poses, how and when to use them, how difficult they are to master, and be able to make the poses easier for beginners.

  5. Step 5

    Create a sample lesson plan for a yoga class and practice how to give verbal instructions and demonstrate yoga poses. Learn the Dos and don't for correcting students' mistakes while build the students self esteem.

  6. Step 6

    Although no certification is necessary to teach yoga in the U.S. or Canada in order to call yourself an Anusara yoga instructor it is necessary to receive an Anusara certification.

  7. Becoming a Certified Anusara Instructor

  8. Step 1

    Becoming a Anusara Instructor is not as simple as teaching a yoga class. Anusara Yoga® is a nationally registered yoga school that offers a professional yoga teacher certification for teachers who meet some stringent requirements.

  9. Step 2

    Be prepared to meet the prerequisites for applying for certification: (Once you have fulfilled all the prerequisites, please request an application for certification from Anusara Yoga.)Minimum of 4 years practicing and studying hatha yoga.Minimum of 2 years practicing sitting meditation. Minimum 2 years of teaching yoga. Minimum 2 years of studying Anusara Yoga with any affiliated or certified teachers. (can be included in the 4 years of hatha yoga listed above.)Minimum of 250 credit hours with either John Friend (the founder) or other certified Anusara Yoga teachers.Pass a written take home test that includes yoga philosophy, anatomy/kinesiology, therapeutics, alignment principles, pranayama, asana sequencing.

  • Anusara means “flowing with Grace,” “going with the flow,” and “following your heart all of which are important when trying to become an Anusara instructor.
