How to Identify Fruit Aromas in Wines

In just one glass of wine, it is possible to find a complex series of aromas, including fruit scents. A wine’s aroma or nose, when warmed and exposed to air, can reveal these scents that are characteristic to a variety of wines.Wines like Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs have apple, melon, grapefruit and citrus smells. In Pinot Noirs and Burgundies, you will smell raspberry, cherry, black currant and plum. Use the following steps to see if you can identify the fruity aromas of wines.

  • bottle of wine
  • corkscrew
  • wine glass

    How to identify Fruit Aromas in Wine

  1. Step 1

    Place a glass of wine on the table and swirl the glass rotating it at least 3 times so that the wine opens up and mixes with the air.

  2. Step 2

    Put your nose directly into the glass and sniff the wine.

  3. Step 3

    As you smell the wine, think about what aromas come to mind.

  4. Step 4

    Look for the fruit aromas like lemon, citrus, melons, apples and raspberries to name a few. There are over 35 fruit aromas in wines.

  5. Step 5

    Continue to practice and pay attention to particular smells so you can learn to identify the fruit aromas.
