Dieting is not always easy.
Dieting is not always easy.

Low-carbohydrate diets are very popular because they do not necessarily require users to eliminate popular, high-fat foods like bacon, cheeses and red meats from their daily diet. However, one thing that low-carb dieters do have to deal with is sweets-withdrawal. Because low-carb diets rely on an extremely low intake of carbs and sugar to be effective, even cheating once in a while can dramatically slow your progress. In this article, you will learn how to pick sugary treats on a low-carb diet without sabotaging all your hard work.

Things You'll Need:

  • Sugar-free whipped cream
  1. Step 1

Look for sugar substitutes. Sugar substitutes like Splenda --which is actually made from real sugar--can dramatically decrease the amount of sugar and carbohydrates in a treat. Choose products that contain Splenda or other sugar substitutes--for example sugar-free jello pudding cups--instead of their sugar-full counterparts.

  2. Step 2
Fresh fruit is always a healthy choice.

Grab fruity desserts. Although fruits must be carefully monitored on many low-carb diets, desserts with fresh fruit in them still tend to be lower in sugar than processed treats.

  3. Step 3

Pile on the sugar-free whipped cream. Sugar-free whipped cream is a delicious way to make a tiny bite of something sweet last. For example, if you can't resist a brownie, cut yourself a tiny bite. Then dress it up with frozen sugar-free whipped cream to make the goodness last longer. You'll feel satisfied without compromising your diet.

  4. Step 4

Check out diabetic desserts. Many groceries stock diabetic-friendly desserts in either the health foods or the pharmacy section of the store. These treats are very satisfying but tend to have little or no real sugar in their ingredients.

  5. Step 5
Don't go overboard! A little sugar goes a long way.

Plan ahead. If you know that you are about to crack your low-sugar resolution, plan for it. Save your daily allotment of carbohydrates and sugar for that treat. You'll have to be very good the rest of the day, but careful planning will help you overcome the negative effects of indulging in a little sweetness.

on 4/7/2009 I eat low-carb (2 net carbs!) chocolate chunks ordered from an online low-carb food products store, and once a week or so, I treat myself to a medium-size oatmeal cookie from a major fast food chain. It has some fiber with the sugar so it's not so bad, and I know it has 150 calories. And, combining peanut butter w/ the low carb chocolate chunks makes a dreamy and creamy topping that you can enjoy in a little bowl without sabotaging your low-carb plan - i.e.,"approved" sweets!
