Things You'll Need:
- Popsicle sticks (thin or wide style)
- 2 to 3 bouquets of silk flowers
- Bag of moss - green, grey or beige
- Blocks of craft foam
- Craft paint (your favorite colors)
- Paint brushes
- Glue Gun
- Clear glue sticks
- Craft glue
- Scissors
- Craft scissors
- Cutting tool
- Flower containers (small to medium)
- Newspaper
- Florist tape
-
Step 1
Prepare your work area by spreading newspaper over the area to protect surface from spills and drips.
-
Step 2
Lay paint and brushes on the work table along with the number of sticks you will be painting.
-
Step 3
Begin painting both sides of the sticks from top to bottom. Paint each side of the stick the same color or alternate between two colors by painting one side one color and the other side another color. Place sticks aside and let dry thoroughly.
-
Step 4
Place a clear glue stick securely inside the glue gun. Plug in the glue gun and place it in a convenient yet safe and secure area away from children and pets.
-
Step 5
Select the containers that will contain your flowers and fill each with craft foam to within 1" of the rim. The amount of craft foam needed will depend on the size, style and type of container used and may require cutting of the foam to make it fit snugly inside the container. If needed, a small amount of hot glue can be added to the bottom of the foam before it is inserted into the container to help hold foam in place.
-
Step 6
Prepare the flowers. If you're working with a bouquet of silk flowers and stems are all connected to one main stalk, use the craft scissors and cut the individual flower stems away from the main stalk. Trim each stem in varying lengths between 3 inches and 6 inches so you will have different heights to your stick flowers. In addition to the stems, cut a variety of flower heads, buds and leaves completely away from the stems. These loose flowers and leaves will be used in Step 8.
-
Step 7
Take the florist tape and cut several pieces 6 inches in length. Select a dry, painted stick and a flower stem. Place the flower stem behind the stick. Depending on the length of the stem will determine if the flower head is just above the top of the stick (3" length) or over the top of the stick (4" to 6" in length). Holding the stem in place, take one piece of florist tape and starting at the top place the tape on the stick and begin wrapping it, in one place, around the stem and stick. Take a second piece of florist tape and begin taping 3 inches down from the top of the stick. Repeat Step 7 to create as many stick flowers as needed.
-
Step 8
To cover the florist tape on your stick flower, make selections from your loose flowers and leaves. Add a small amount of hot glue or craft glue to the back of the flower or leaf then place onto the taped part of the stick (front and back). Hold in place (be careful if using hot glue) until the flower or leaf sets then put it aside and let it dry completely.
-
Step 9
Select a prepared container and begin inserting your stick flowers using a mixture of different flowers, stick colors and heights. To add additional security to the sticks, place hot glue on the end of the stick before inserting into the foam base. To add filler flowers to cover the stem on the back of the sticks and to add fullness to the flowers, insert flower stems or leaf stems that have not been attached to a stick.
-
Step 10
Once all flowers have been inserted, using the moss, take as much as needed to work all around the base of the stick flowers creating a thin but full layer of covering.
