How to Use a Sewing Machine to Sew a Zipper

  1. Step 1

Pin the zipper into place in your sewing project. Make sure you change the presser foot on your machine to a zipper foot.

  2. Step 2

Begin to sew below where the seam will be for the waist. This is for projects with a hem at the top, like a pair of slacks. You will finish the top later.

  3. Step 3

Starting on the left side of the zipper, with the fabric laid flat and the zipper underneath, stitch toward the bottom of the zipper.

  4. Step 4

Stop at the bottom with your needle in the fabric.

  5. Step 5

Lift the zipper foot and turn fabric so that the zipper is perpendicular to you.

  6. Step 6

Put the zipper foot back down and carefully stitch straight across the bottom of the zipper. If the zipper is metal, you may want to manually stitch across the bottom by turning the wheel on the side of your machine.

  7. Step 7

Stop at the other side with the needle in the fabric. Lift the zipper foot and turn fabric again. The top of the zipper will be closest to you.

  8. Step 8

Stitch back up the other side. Remember to stop before the seam for the waist band.

  9. Step 9

Now your zipper is sewn in securely. You can move onto to the next step in your sewing project!
