How to Learn Romance Languages for Travel

Step 1

Learn French or Spanish first. All the other Romance languages will be easy after that. Romance languages: French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese--all derive from Latin.
Step 2

Study the other Romance languages. By starting with French, Italian will be be easier. The two languages are closer to each other.
Step 3

Watch subtitled movies that are filmed in a Romance language. Hearing the way people speak, the sounds, and the repetition will help you learn the language.
Step 4

Practice with tapes or CDs at home and in your car whenever you can
Step 5

Find a friend who is fluent in one or more of the Romance languages to practice with.

Tips & Warnings

Learn the most significant phrases that you think you may need for travel first. If you don't become fluent, learning key phrases can easily get you through a trip.
Don't try to do too much at once. Allow yourself a year to learn a Romance language before travel if possible.
