Romance languages are really important for travel, and learning them can make all the difference in the success of your trip. Here is the best way to go about it.

    How to Learn Romance Languages for Travel

  1. Step 1

    Learn French or Spanish first. All the other Romance languages will be easy after that. Romance languages: French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese--all derive from Latin.

  2. Step 2

    Study the other Romance languages. By starting with French, Italian will be be easier. The two languages are closer to each other.

  3. Step 3

    Watch subtitled movies that are filmed in a Romance language. Hearing the way people speak, the sounds, and the repetition will help you learn the language.

  4. Step 4

    Practice with tapes or CDs at home and in your car whenever you can

  5. Step 5

    Find a friend who is fluent in one or more of the Romance languages to practice with.

Tips & Warnings
  • Learn the most significant phrases that you think you may need for travel first. If you don't become fluent, learning key phrases can easily get you through a trip.
  • Don't try to do too much at once. Allow yourself a year to learn a Romance language before travel if possible.
