If you want to quickly tie up your boat to a pier, a horse to a post, a tent line to a tree or a line to a cleat, then this easy-to-undo figure eight hitch is a good bet. Practice makes perfect so try at home with a rope and a stick.

Things You'll Need:

    How to Tie A Figure Eight Hitch

  1. Step 1

    Run one end of the rope over the post and bring it back under the post

  2. Step 2

    Run the end of the rope over the standing line forming one loop

  3. Step 3

    Run the rope back under the standing line making a second loop. It should look like a figure eight, hence the name of the knot

  4. Step 4

    Take the end of the rope and bring it through the first formed loop

  5. Step 5

    Pull on the standing line while holding the end of the rope until the figure eight hitch is secure

Tips & Warnings
  • This figure eight hitch knot is quick to tie and easy to untie but is not very secure
