Identifying a 3 Seconds violation and how to make the call

  1. Step 1

An offensive player is not allowed to be in the free throw lane (the paint) for more than three consecutive seconds (unless the shot is in the air). The clock for how long a player can be in the free throw lane resets when a player leaves the lane or a shot hits the rim.

  2. Step 2

Make the call when you spot a 3 seconds violation. The first thing a referee needs to do is blow the play dead to make the call.

  3. Step 3

Immediately after the whistle is blown, you have to make the appropriate hand signal to identify the call you made. In the case of a 3 Seconds violation, using three fingers, you put your index, middle and ring fingers on your left hand together. In addition, you put your thumb over the fingernail on your pinkie. Your hand needs to be up in the air and over your head so the players on the court can see your signal.
