How to Live with Vitiligo

Vitiligo affects approximately 1 percent of the world's population. Vitiligo is a disorder in which pigmentation cells (melanocytes) are damaged or destroyed, causing white patches to appear on the skin. It may also cause premature greying of the hair. While vitiligo is not harmful, the effects it may cause in one's appearance can be emotionally stressful. There is no cure for vitiligo, but there are several treatment options including skin grafts, bleaching, repigmentation and more. Below are some suggestions to help you cope with vitiligo.

If you are bothered by white patches that may mar your appearance, makeup can help. Cosmetics can be especially useful in covering the patches that affect areas of skin on the face and neck. Choose products that don't easily run, smear or fade.

Self-tanning products have their advantages. Self-tanning products last longer than makeup and don't easily wash off. They are particularly good for covering affected areas of skin that are exposed during warm weather. Many self-tanning products last for several days. You don't have to worry about them wearing off as you perspire.

Join a support group. Although vitiligo has no harmful effects physically, it can affect one's emotional state. People who suffer from vitiligo may be embarrassed by their appearance. Self-esteem may suffer and depression may result. It can help to share your feelings with others who suffer from the same condition.
