A fun day of sailing or fishing at sea can become a miserable experience if you have motion sickness. The good news is there are some things you can do to prevent motion sickness and enjoy your day. Here are some tips to prevent motion sickness while sailing.

From Quick Guide: Info on Travel Sickness
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get plenty of rest before sailing. A tired and exhausted body is more susceptible to motion sickness.

  2. Step 2

Avoid eating greasy and acidic foods before sailing. They tend to upset the stomach and worsen the effects of motion sickness. However, don't go without food before sailing either. Eat something if not a full meal before sailing.

  3. Step 3

Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration while sailing. Dehydration lowers a body's resistance and brings about motion sickness more easily.

  4. Step 4

Stay out in the open and focus your sight on the horizon rather than the water. Avoid the inside cabin or an enclosed space which makes the motion feel worse.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid alcohol which dehydrates the body. Soda crackers may also help settle the stomach. Drink Coke or Pepsi. They both contain phosphoric acid which helps control vomiting.
