The acidity in wine is the tart, citrus flavor one tastes. The main reason for the acidity is to allow wine to maintain its fresh tasting quality. If a wine is too low in acids it can taste dull and flat. Conversely, if a wine is too high in acids, it can taste overly sour. Here’s how to taste and feel the acidity in wine.

  • good bottle of wine, red or white
  • corkscrew
  • wine glass

    How to Identify the Acidity in Wine

  1. Step 1

    Take a sip of wine.

  2. Step 2

    Swish it around in your mouth, like a gentle gargle.

  3. Step 3

    Use your tongue to feel the acidity, paying particular attention to the tingling sensation.

  4. Step 4

    Swallow then exhale, noticing the wine’s acidity.

  5. Step 5

    Look for the following flavors after each sip. You may taste the fruitiness of lemons, limes, green apples, citrus and grapes.

  6. Step 6

    You may notice a subtle, vinegar quality. These are all the different acids in wine.
