How to Make Barbeques Healthier

When it comes to summer, barbeques are one of the most popular ways to entertain. Unfortunately, many dishes served at barbeques are far from healthy. Everything from potato salad to hamburgers can contain a lot of fat and calories. Thankfully, there are a few steps you can follow to ensure that your barbeques are as healthy as they can be.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Choose lean meats. It doesn't matter if you're making hamburgers, hot dogs, pork chops, or even chicken. It's easy to make these items healthier simply by choosing lean versions. For example, prepare hamburgers using 93% lean ground beef or 98% lean ground chicken. Speaking of chicken, when preparing whole pieces, choose white meat that has had the skin removed. When it comes to hot dogs, you can find many brands that offer fat-free versions. Last, but not least, buy pork loin chops and cut away any excess fat before grilling.
Step2
Make homemade side dishes. While store-bought side dishes may be easier, homemade side dishes are easier to control. For example, you'll be able to make potato salad using low-fat mayonnaise or even olive oil. You'll even be able to boost the nutritional value of your baked beans by adding vegetables. Best of all, you'll avoid foods that are overly processed.
Step3
Prepare low calorie drinks. Lemonade and sweet tea may be popular at barbeques, but they can be loaded with sugar. A simple fix for this is to use a sugar substitute. You could also prepare different drinks. For example, you could mix fruit purees with diet lemon lime soda. This drink is refreshing and much healthier than regular sodas. Of course, you absolutely can't go wrong with ice cold water.
Step4
Keep the dessert simple. Summertime isn't a great time for heavy desserts. Instead you want something light and refreshing. A great choice would be angel food cake with sliced strawberries and fat-free whipped topping. This dessert is not only light, but it's fat-free as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • When buying prepackaged meats, always check the nutrition label to make sure the product is as healthy as it claims to be.
