How to Prevent Finger Sprains While Bowling

Bowling is generally a safe sport, but there are some injuries that bowlers are more prone to than others. You can prevent finger sprains while bowling by following some basic tips.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Make sure your bowling ball fits you properly. Using someone else's ball or a ball that fit you when you were younger can lead to finger sprains.

  2. Step 2

    Take your bowling ball to your local pro shop or bowling alley shop. An expert can check your finger holes to make sure they fit right.

  3. Step 3

    Ask the pro shop to drill the holes out if they are too small, or show you how to use tape or rubber plugs if they are too large.

  4. Step 4

    Make sure you are using your ball properly to prevent finger sprains. Don't put your fingers all the way into the holes if the ball is a semi-fingertip grip, or only use your fingertips on a full-grip ball.

  5. Step 5

    Use powder, the bowling alley air dryer, and towels to prevent sweat from accumulating on your fingers. Sweat can cause your fingers to stick inside a ball, which can lead to finger sprains.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also hurt your fingers bowling by accidentally getting them caught between two balls on the ball return rack.
  • If you use tape on your fingers, remember to check after each throw to make sure the tape is still secure.
  • Finger powder can make the floor slippery for other bowlers if accidentally spilled.
