How to Prevent Finger Sprains While Bowling

Though bowling isn’t a contact sport, that doesn’t mean participants don’t risk injury. Finger sprains are among the most common ailments associated with bowling. Preventing sprained fingers, often the result of an improperly sized ball or poor form, requires a bowler to check both his equipment and his technique.

Blame Your Bowling Ball

  • A major cause of finger sprains while bowling is using a ball that isn’t properly sized. Make sure the holes on your bowling ball are fitted properly to reflect the size and spread of your fingers. If the holes are too small, or are located too close or too far apart, it places pressure on your fingers and makes it difficult to release. If they’re too big, the ball may slip out of your hand too early and strain your fingers with the unexpected and sudden weight. Pick a bowling ball that’s not too heavy to avoid extra strain.

Check Your Technique

  • Prevent as much wear and tear on your fingers as possible to reduce your injury risk. When walking to your starting position on the lane, for example, cradle the ball to your chest with your non-bowling arm, rather than with your fingers already inserted into the holes. In addition, if you’re an experienced bowler who’s suddenly suffering from finger sprains, check your form. It may be a sign that there’s a flaw in your delivery that's causing you to suddenly place extra strain on your fingers.
