Step 1
First off, learn the language of the country and culture you're visiting. At least learn a few stock phrases, like "Good morning." "Can I order breakfast?" " I'm lost:" Please help me. " Where's the bathroom? " --and so on.
-
Step 2
If possible, stay with a friend you have there instead of at an hotel, even if-- in the case of business travelers--your company is paying for the hotel.
-
Step 3
Pack some familiar items for the trip: Your mp3 player, your own alarm clock and some photos of your family that you can display on the desk of whatever room or space you're staying in.
-
Step 4
Find time to talk to the natives: go to a local marketplace to buy your gifts--not to a huge department store. In some cultures, price-bargaining is part of the process, so do not hesitate to do that.
-
Step 5
Call your family everyday, and talk to each member for at least five minutes....
