This article will show you the steps involved in automating your track levels in Pro Tools. Automation allows you to make much more precise level adjustments than just moving the volume fader alone.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pro Tools software
  • Pro Tools hardware interface
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Choose a track whose levels you would like to automate and set the tracks view to "volume." A red line will appear inside your track. This line represents the track's automation.

  2. Step 2

Open the automation window by selecting "Window-Automation" from the top menu bar.

  3. Step 3

Click "volume" in the automation window to enable volume automation.

  4. Step 4

Change the automation setting inside your track from "read" to "touch" by selecting "touch" from the drop-down menu.

  5. Step 5

Press play to listen to your track.

  6. Step 6

With the track playing, move your volume fader. You will notice that the red line is mimicking the movements of the volume fader. Congratulations, you just recorded volume automation!

  7. Step 7

To make adjustments to this automation manually, select points on the line with the grabber tool. These points that have been created in the previous step are called "break points." Move the points up to make the volume level increase and down to make the level decrease. That's all there is to it!
