Garment bags are a type of luggage made of a breathable material to hold clothing while traveling. The clothing is hung inside the bag with regular hangers to keep them free of wrinkles and snags that can occur in a regular suitcase. Many people don’t realize that there is a proper way to use garment bags and a wrong way to use the bags. They over pack the bags with heavier items or try to fit everything they need into one bag. The best way to use a garment bag is to pack it carefully and use the proper hangers.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Place your garment bag flat on the bag before packing it. This makes it easier to pack and helps you see how much free space you have.

  2. Step 2

Use lightweight and flexible plastic hangers in the garment bag. Metal hangers can damage clothing and also poke holes in the fabric of the bag.

  3. Step 3

Hang your clothing inside based on size, with the bigger or longer clothes in the back and lightweight clothing in front. As you travel the heavier items will press against the lighter ones, helping remove any wrinkles.

  4. Step 4

Put your shoes and similar items in the bottom of the bag or pack them separately. Some garment bags come with special pockets for this specific use, but if they don’t, you might want to consider carrying your shoes in a smaller bag.

  5. Step 5

Pick up the bag frequently to see how heavy it is and look for any signs of wear and tear. By doing this you can see when the bag is overstuffed and when your clothing might cause the bag to tear or rip.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use small plastic bags to protect the garment bag from stains or damage. Use the bags on your shoes, toiletries, and accessories.
  • Avoid using large or heavy plastic hangers, which add unnecessary weight to the garment bag and limit’s the amount of clothing you can fit inside.
