Things You'll Need:
- Firm enough mattress
- Soft enough mattress pad
- Pillows
- High-thread-count sheets
- Soft cotton blankets
- Incense or essential oils
- Pink light bulb
- Remote-controlled CD player
- Relaxing music CDs
-
Step 1
Start with a very firm, supportive mattress. Be sure it's big enough for you to sleep comfortably, along or with a companion. If you both toss and turn a lot, get a king-sized bed. If your budget is limited, it's better to have a great mattress on a simple metal frame than a mediocre mattress on a fancy bed.
-
Step 2
Layer on a soft, supportive sleeping surface such as a 4-inch memory foam mattress pad or a featherbed -- or both. Dress your bed in high-thread-count cotton sheets. Furnish with a variety of pillows: down for cuddling, bouncy foam to support your legs, feather-and-down combinations for your head, or memory foam. Add soft, 100 percent cotton blankets; in colder climates, try a down comforter.
-
Step 3
Scent the area around your bed, using essential oils such as lavender and patchouli, both great for relaxation. Use sandalwood and frankincense for a more exotic atmosphere. A vanilla-scented candle on the nightstand is homey, but effective.
-
Step 4
Be sure there's at least one lamp in the bedroom with a small, pink bulb. Just before bed, turn on the lamp and let it bathe your bed in a soft pink glow.
-
Step 5
Play soft, relaxing music on your CD player in the moments before you retire. Keep the remote control on the nightstand, so you can turn it off later or adjust the volume. Now, slip into your comfy bed, snuggling into the soft sheets, surrounded by delightful sounds and scents. Night night.
