Rope halters are used for training horses or dealing with behavioral issues. Rope halters work especially well, as opposed to some other materials, because the thin material enables the horses to yield to their own pressure. Plus, they give good control over the horse. Many people find these halters rewarding to tie on their own, not only because of the feeling of having the horse respond to something you created personally, but also because it is much more cost-effective to tie one yourself instead of purchasing one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 20 feet of 1/4 inch polyester rope (rope length may vary depending on the size of your horse - these directions are for adult-size horses)
  • Matches for melting and sealing the rope ends.

Tying a Rope Halter for your horse

  1. Step 1

Grasp the halter and enter your horse's stall. Slide your horse's nose through the nose band and bring the headpiece behind the horse's ears. Make sure the throat latch is resting just behind your horse's cheek.

  2. Step 2

Thread the end of the headpiece through the throat latch's loop. Pull it tighter until you have room for about three fingers under the throat latch.

  3. Step 3

Tighten the loose end of the headpiece around the side of the loop, and place them behind it. This part will require some tight hand coordination.

  4. Step 4

Pull the loose end all the way around, and put it through the circle created by the headpiece and loose end. Then tighten it. If the halter has been tied correctly, there will be a loose piece of rope sticking hope (make sure the piece of rope is sticking up and not down).

  5. Step 5

Check on your horse often to make sure he is happy and comfortable. You don't want your horse to be uncomfortable or unhappy in the set-up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Rope halters make it harder for horses to break away, as opposed to their nylon halter counterparts.
  • The last thing you need is the nightmare of having your horse wander off. To make sure that your horse doesn't attempt to escape while you're trying to untangle the halter, loosely wrap the head rope around the horse's neck and hold it in place.
  • Do not leave a halter on a loose horse.
  • Make sure the halter doesn't get tangled. If you place the halter on wrong or in a twisted manner, it could cause great discomfort to your horse!
