Things You'll Need:
-
Step 1
Measure the diameter of your head around the largest part, including the tips of your ears. The most important aspect to selecting a BMX helmet is choosing one that fits well, and you need to know your size before you begin looking.
-
Step 2
Try any helmet on before you purchase it. The helmet should fit comfortably on your head with no gaps, and with the chin strap connected it should be tight enough to stay in place even if you try to pull it off.
-
Step 3
Consider the different styles of BMX helmets. Typically most BMX riders choose a closed helmet with a full face mask. BMX helmets without a face mask can also work for regular riding. Visors, tails or other add-ons to helmets can look good but could also be safety hazards in a crash.
-
Step 4
Choose a color that fits your style as well as riding area. Dark colored helmets can be hard for motorists to see, so if you're riding along streets it's wise to choose a brightly colored or reflective helmet.
-
Step 5
Make sure your helmet meets safety requirements. Inside each BMX helmet you should find a safety standards sticker. Do not purchase a helmet that doesn't have one.
