1
Dress to impress. The most important clothing you should have in your wardrobe are clothes that make you look nice. You should have a formal, business casual and casual outfits that look good on you. You will likely go out for many parts where you are playing an average person on the street. There may not always be a specific type for which you are auditioning. For these cases, it is best to simply look confident, well put together and like someone the audience would enjoy watching on screen.

Determine your types. Regardless of what parts you eventually want to play, there may be roles that fit your “look.” Spend some time watching television and movies to see who looks like you and what parts they play. Look at the clothes that they wear and begin to find pieces that match what you see when you see them perform.

Stretch yourself. Even if you typically go out for one type of role, you may get called out for roles outside of your type from time to time. These are great opportunities to push yourself and get new and different work, so you definitely want to make sure you have clothing that works for these roles. For example, if you typically play the buttoned-up type, it can be helpful to have something fun and sexy as well. Or if you normally go out for the buxom temptress, find an outfit that shows off your demure side.

You may also want to have some specific costumes like scrubs or hospital garb, a tuxedo or formal gown, tutus, mechanic uniform—anything! These definitely come in handy when a casting director has a last-minute call for specific parts.

Tips & Warnings
It can sound expensive to try and assemble all these pieces of clothing. But you don’t have to buy high-end, top-of-the-line clothes. Second-hand stores, vintage stores, thrift stores and garage sales are great places to find inexpensive clothes that add character, variety and opportunity to your wardrobe.
Some actors set aside specific clothes to wear to auditions only. This can prevent your audition clothes from getting wrinkled, stained or damaged.
Make sure that whatever you wear is clean and camera-ready.
