How to Perform a Dressage Test
Dressage is one of the most beautiful and precise equestrian disciplines and is consequently very difficult to learn. However, once you master the basic movements in this sport, you might be ready to perform your first dressage test at a horse show.
Things You'll Need

- Dressage bridle

1
Choose a beginner dressage test for which you have learned all the movements. You can find many of the most frequently used tests at websites like Dressage Tests Online (see Resources below), or you can order an omnibus from the U.S. Dressage Federation (USDF).
-
2
Memorize each of the movements in the dressage test and ask a trainer or experienced friend to help you with any instructions you don't understand. A beginner test usually includes things like working walk, working trot, sitting trot, working canter, 20-meter circles and changes of direction on the diagonal.

3
Perform the dressage test on the ground first before you try it mounted. Know which letters signal which new movements and commit each step to memory.
-
4
Walk the dressage test on your horse without adding any of the other gaits to the test. This allows you to sort through the pattern without having to worry about speed. You might need to do this several times before you feel comfortable.
-
5
Perform the dressage test in its entirety, following the gait changes as directed in the test manual. Ask a trainer to watch your practice performance and to critique it so you'll have something to work on.

Tips & Warnings
Think about each new movement several paces before you need to make the change so you won't surprise your horse with a sudden command.
Go deep into every corner and use the arena to your full advantage.
Slow your horse and make each movement deliberate. No points are awarded for speed in dressage.
Remember that you will be disqualified at a horse show if your horse leaves the arena with all four feet or resists you too much during the dressage test.
Don't forget to salute the judge before and after the test or whenever you are instructed to do so.
