Dribbling and passing are two of the most fundamental parts of soccer. This article gives you tips on controlling the ball.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soccer team
  • Ball
  • Goal
  1. Step 1

Keep the ball close to you. The most important part of possession is making sure that the ball is not in harm's way of getting taken from you. However, keep touches to a minimum and don't feel that you need to constantly touch the ball. If you're focusing on touching the ball every step, you may trip or look down and the defender may take it from you.

  2. Step 2

Keeping your head up is the best way to stay aware while you have possession of the soccer ball. If you keep your head up, you will not only know where the defenders are, but you will also know where your teammates are and it will give you the opportunity to make a good pass.

  3. Step 3

Another trick is to make sure that the ball is moving at your speed. If you are sprinting, the ball cannot be moving at a crawl. Similarly, if you are slowing down, make sure that the ball is not moving faster than you. This is another helpful way to make sure that the ball stays in close proximity to you rather than the defender.

  4. Step 4

Always have the ball in the position so that you can do what you want with it. Make sure the ball is straight in front of you, not to the side of you, so that it is less likely to get taken away. This helps leave the option to pass as you will have better control over the ball.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dribble with the outside of your foot rather than the inside. This makes it easier to change direction when controlling the ball and keeps passing easier as well.
  • Make sure not to look down at the ball too often or a defender could easily sneak up and steal the ball.
