How to Adjust Volume on an Amp and Drum Machine

Volume adjustment or "gain adjustment" is an important aspect when setting up your amplifier and drum machine. If you practice correct "gain staging" the sound you reproduce will be clean and crisp. This article will show you the steps and the proper order in which to make your adjustments.

• Amplifier
• Drum Machine
• 1/4 inch cable.

1. Make sure that both your amplifier and drum machine are turned on.

2. Plug a 1/4 inch cable into the output of your drum machine. Plug the other end of the cable into the input of your amplifier.

3. Turn the volume of your drum machine up to its maximum volume. Setting the drum machine's volume as high as it will go will ensure that the signal being sent from the drum machine to the amplifier is as clear as possible.

4. Finally, turn the volume knob of your amplifier up to the desired level. VERY IMPORTANT: ALWAYS make sure the volume on your amplifier is turned ALL the way down before you begin adjusting the volume. If you fail to do this you may risk damaging your amplifier or worse your hearing. Start low, and slowly turn the volume up until you reach a comfortable listening level. Now you are ready to rock!
