Eating healthy can be difficult if you don't have access to fresh produce. But if you don't have time to make it to the store or if that's currently not an option, canned foods can also be healthy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy lots of canned vegetables and legumes like peas, carrots, artichokes, black beans, pinto beans and garbanzo beans. Vegetables and legumes are high in fiber and nutrients. Although canned and frozen vegetables don't have the same nutritional value as fresh, they are still great for you! Canned beans are a healthy and cheap protein that can be added to tacos, soups, stews and dips.

  2. Step 2
Dave's Gourmet has a great prepared red sauce.

Enjoy proteins like tuna, salmon and chicken canned in water instead of oil. If you have proteins canned in oil, rinse them in water to remove the excess oil. Add canned proteins to pastas, salads and casseroles for a quick meal.

  3. Step 3

Check the salt content on all canned foods and try to get no salted added products.

  4. Step 4

Check the sugar content in canned fruits. Drain canned fruits from their syrup and combine with a low fat cottage cheese for a healthy, protein rich snack.

Tips & Warnings
  • Combine canned foods with as many fresh food as you can get your hands on. Add beans to a fresh taco salad or make fresh hummus with garbanzo beans and add to a pita stuffed with fresh vegetables.
  • Check the serving sizes in each can.
