How to Defeat FOXHOUND in Metal Gear Solid

Before I continue, I want to let you know that this guide contains possible spoilers to Metal Gear Solid. FOXHOUND is the main group of villains in Metal Gear Solid. They consist of Liquid Snake, Revolver Ocelot, Vulcan Raven, Sniper Wolf, Decoy Octopus, and Psycho Mantis. Some characters you fight more than once, and others you don't fight at all. This guide will show you how to defeat each boss, along with some tips you may not have known about.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

• A Playstation console
• A copy of Metal Gear Solid

Revolver Ocelot

1. When you start this battle, you will notice that you do not have radar available and that you cannot cross through the center because of the C4. Neither of these are much of a problem since you're in such a small area. First find a spot where Ocelot will shoot at you, but you can dodge easily. His bullets ricochet of walls, so be careful.
2. Pay close attention to the number of bullets under Ocelot's energy bar. When it runs out, he cannot fire until he reloads. Use this opportunity to fire your gun at him while he's reloading. Remember, he cannot attack until his gun has completely filled with bullets.
3. Repeat these two steps until you defeat him. The time of the battle and difficulty depend on your difficulty setting. It could take about a minute or it could take five or ten minutes. To reload quickly, perform a tactical reload by pressing R1 twice.

Vulcan Raven (M1 Tank)

4. Fighting a tank can appear overwhelming, but a quick way to stop it from firing tank rounds is to use your chaff at the start. It will still be able to fire the machine gun, though.
5. Run close to the tank and equip your grenades. You goal here is to throw the grenades as close to the tank's gunner position as possible. At close range you'll have to watch out for the tank running you over, but if you move around it quickly enough, then it will be continually trying to change it's position.
6. The closer your grenades hit, the more damage you do to the gunner. If you throw the grenade right in the hole, you will defeat the gunner instantly. A second gunner comes out, though, so keep on your guard and perform the same steps one more time to defeat the tank.

Psycho Mantis

7. After you knock out Meryl, Psycho Mantis will appear and do his little psychic analysis of you. When he's done, the screen will turn black, with a "HIDEO" at the top of the screen.
8. Use this time to quickly switch your controller over to the player 2 port. This prevents Mantis from predicting your movements and makes it easier to defeat him. Equip the thermal goggles and you will be able to see through his optic camouflage and shoot at him.
9. Each object he throws at you has a specific pattern to it. Keep a mental note of the movements each object takes and use this to predict the movements of his attacks.
10. When he brings Meryl up, knock her out again to prevent her from shooting herself. After this continue shooting at him until his energy runs out. At the end he will try to throw everything he's got at you, so quickly finish him off.

Sniper Wolf (1st Battle)

11. After Meryl goes down, you will have to get the Sniper rifle from the tank hanger. When you get back, find a hiding spot at the side of the wall and equip your diazepam.
12. Take a diazepam to smooth your aiming, then equip the thermal goggles. This makes it easier to find Wolf on the landing. Go out and equip the sniper rifle. While you're firing at Wolf, if she shoots you or your diazepam runs out, un-equip the sniper rifle and go behind the wall.
13. Remember not to overuse the diazepam, because you will be fighting wolf later. Unless you're a very good shoot with a shaky camera, it will help your aim.

Liquid Snake (Hind D)

14. After you've found the stinger missiles and are ready to fight Liquid, head to the outside roof of the tower. Avoid the gunfire of the ship by using the surroundings and adjusting your position.
15. Use the stinger when you are at a safe area and fire at him. After you hit him, he will immediately fire at you, so find some cover. Continue these steps throughout the battle. Keep an eye on your radar to find the Hind's position.
16. When his energy is at half, he will fire a missile that will essentially attack everything on the roof. Hide behind a crate to prevent yourself fro being hit. At the end of his health, he will fire one more missile. Hide behind the crate again to avoid being hit.

Sinper Wolf (2nd Battle)

17. In this setting you will have a much greater area to cover in the snow field. Find some cover, like a tree, and use your diazepam. Then equip the thermal goggles and equip your sniper rifle.
18. Finding Wolf will be your first task. She has a lot of cover to go through and will typically run from one spot to another. Keep track of her movements with the sniper rifle. When she stops, shoot her quickly before she shoots you. The harder the difficulty, the faster she shoots. The thermal goggles will allow you to see her movements better.
19. If she shoots you, your aim is thrown off and can be difficult to find her again. The best option is to press R1 to un-equip the rifle and go behind your cover. When you are ready, equip the rifle again and search for her. Use your diazpam when your aim gets shaky.
20. Another trick is to use Nikita Missiles, if you have any. Find some cover, equip your Nikita launcher and fire. She can shoot the missile with her rifle, so you will have to be swift. Don't use to many though, as you will need them for the next battle with Raven.

Vulcan Raven (2nd Battle)

21. This time around, Raven has you placed in a grid of crates. He runs around the area with his mini gun, that never runs out of ammo. You will have to keep a close eye on your radar. Raven's vision cone is much larger and he tends to run and make sudden turns quickly. Watch out for crates that fall over. They will block off certain paths and also reveal extra items.
22. Using cover is the best way to avoid damage. Find a central area where you can stay to use your Nikita launcher and where Raven passes by often, but not all the time. This is because you can use any C4 or Claymore mines to damage him when he passes by the area.
23. The Nikita missiles will be your primary weapon for this battle. Use the missiles to guide through the grid and hit Raven. He can destroy the missiles with his gun though, so try and sneak up on him from behind. If he approaches close to you, un-equip the Nikita, and run from him. Use your C4, if you have any planted.
24. Word to the warning: as with all bosses, the harder the difficulty, the harder the boss. Raven is no exception in this case. When you play on extreme mode, he NEVER stops running. Always keep an eye on your radar so that he doesn't suddenly sneak up on you.
25. After you defeat him, Raven reveals the truth about Decoy Octopus, so don't worry if you're confused as to why he's not in this guide.

Metal Gear REX and Liquid Snake

26. REX has four primary modes of attacking: missiles, Vulcan gun, laser, and its feet. The gun will be used in every other attack, but dodging it should be easy. If you've found the body armor, equip it to take less damage. If you're far away, it will fire missiles and if you're close, it will use the laser. If you're too close, it will step on you, killing you instantly.
27. A good pattern to use is to let REX fire its machine gun while getting just far enough away so that it will use the missiles instead of the laser. When it fires the missiles, get closer to REX, equip the Stinger, and fire at the radar dish. The missiles can't hit you if you're close enough to REX. Immediately un-equip the Stinger, and dodge the gun while getting back into missile range. Determining ranges will take a few tries to get, but it's easy to remember where to be.
28. When the radar dome is destroyed, you will go through a story arc with the cyborg ninja. Snake will not be able to fire at Liquid at this point, so don't worry about this.
29. When the ninja is killed, its time to finish REX off. This time, you'll be aiming for Liquid in the cockpit. Follow the same pattern in step 2 to defeat Liquid.
30. After REX is destroyed, you will hit another story arc before fight Liquid hand to hand atop of REX. You have a limited time on this part of three minutes. Attack Liquid by punching him once or twice and he will move to another spot. Every third time he moves, he attacks you and avoid any punches you throw. Dodge this attack and then punch him. Watch out for his charge as it can knock you off REX and kill you. Once his energy is gone, attack him at the edge of REX to knock him down.
31. During the escape, Liquid will catch up to you. Use your machine gun to fire at him. This will take some careful aiming and sensitive movements as he changes positions often. Once you've found a spot where you can hit him, stay in that area until he moves again. He will move places about six times before you hit the end of the tunnel. After you crash, just sit back and watch the ending.

Tips & Warnings

• Always have your rations equipped in case your run out of energy. This will allow rations to kick in the moment your life bar hits zero, and will keep you alive longer. Make sure you find the thermal goggles at the beginning of the game because they help immensely in certain parts. They are located on the top floor in the tank hanger, inside a room with a camera. If you enter through the top shaft at the entrance, it should take you right to them.
• The harder the difficulty, the harder the boss. Use your weapons carefully and wisely. There are also less items, like rations, for you to find, so try not to take too much damage.
