Begin by adding the 1 1/2 cups of confectioners sugar and the 1/3 cup of unsalted butter to your mixer. Beat these two ingredients together until they are well blended.

Separate the egg yolk from the egg white using an egg separator. If you do not own an egg separator you can still separate the yolk from the white by transferring the broken egg back and forth between the two halves of the shell. Allow the white to go into a bowl while keeping the yolk in the shell. After separating the egg discard the white.

Tips & Warnings
If you can find Kirschwasser, use it. Kirsch is different than many cherry liqueurs in that it is not sweet It will not add additional sweetness to your finished cake.
Some modified recipes call for whipped cream. Please don't do that. Black forest cake is made to be dense and heavy.
