How to Play Attack on Facebook

"Attack!" is a game application for Facebook. It is exactly like Risk, except you cannot attack with less than three armies at a time. This makes little difference in game play. Whether you have never played Risk before or you are a seasoned world conqueror and just want to learn how to play Risk on Facebook, this article will get you started.

Instructions

  1. Set Up Attack!

    • 1

You need a Facebook account. If you do not have one, sign up. It is free of charge.

    • 2

Once you have a Facebook account, you will need to add the free Attack! game application to your profile. In the left column under the search box, click "Applications."

    • 3

Click the large "Browse More Applications" button up top.

    • 4

In the "Search Apps" box, type "Attack!"

    • 5

Click "Attack!" from the application choices that appear. This will take you to the Attack! homepage, where you can add the application to your Facebook profile.

    • 6

When adding any application in Facebook, make sure you allow the program to access your profile by leaving the appropriate box check-marked. If you do not want the application to appear in your left menu, news feed, mini-feed or profile links, you may un-check those boxes.

    Playing Attack!

    • 7

Once the Attack! application has been installed on your Facebook account, you are ready to play. Click "Attack!" in your left menu. You will automatically be given the option to invite friends to play Attack! with you. The more people you invite, the more bonus armies you will get to play with in future games. You may skip this step if you prefer.

    • 8

When you enter the Lobby, you will see a list of game rooms where Attack! is being played. You may choose one from the list, or you can opt to have the application choose a room for you. To enter, you will need the requisite number of points. In the beginning stages, try to play 20-point games until you get the hang of it. After you have played a few games and built up more points, you can try your hand at the higher-value games (the highest is 5,000).

    • 9

In the Placement phase of the game, you will build your armies up in the different countries that appear on the game map. Try to claim one whole continent for yourself; bonus armies are awarded each turn to those who occupy entire continents. It is not absolutely necessary though.

    • 10

When building your armies, defend your border countries by fortifying them with many armies. If you do not own a continent and will not likely claim one anytime soon, it is best to concentrate most of your armies in one country. That way it is more "expensive" for your opponents to attack the bulk of your military.

    • 11

When it is your turn to attack, stay away from knee-jerk retaliatory attacks on others, as attacking damages the attacker just as much as it hurts the defender. In fact, sometimes the attacker loses more armies than the defender does. Always attack with more armies than you think you need. Do they have four armies defending? Don't attack with four. Build up at least six before considering an attack on four.

    • 12

There is no need to count dice when playing Attack! on Facebook. The application does that for you, making for some fast game play in comparison to the real-world board game.

    • 13

Do not attack too much or too often. As mentioned in Step 5, attacking often weakens the attacker. So when to attack? One rule of thumb is to prey on the weakest, to keep them weak; prey on the strongest, to weaken them. There are many differing philosophies about how to win at Attack!.

    • 14

Allow other players to attack each other. Anytime someone fights without a conclusive takeover of a country or continent, the other players in the game improve their odds simply by not having fought.

    • 15

One incentive for attacking is that for each turn in which you take over at least one country, you get a card. Build up enough cards, and you can trade them in for bonus armies. Most players make a point of taking over one country every turn. This can be accomplished by trying to attack countries where very few armies reside--preferably only one or two armies.

    • 16

Another incentive for attacking is if you destroy a player's last army, you get all that player's cards. If that victory brings your card count up to five or higher, you must immediately trade them in for bonus armies. Isn't that nice?

    End Game

    • 17

One way to pull off an end game is to kill off one player, take his cards, then use the bonus armies to take out another player, if at all possible. Continue on in this way until you are the only one on the board and you've conquered the world.

    • 18

Another way to pull off an endgame is by laying back as much as possible for the duration of the game, building up armies at your borders, and attacking without notice when you feel you are strong enough. Beware: other players feel intimidated by very large armies and tend to gang up on them. Likewise, if you are ever weak, try to team up with someone else. This is always controversial, but the name of the game is politics.

Finally, if you lose, don't sweat it. Be a good sport and type "gg" (good game) in the chat box.

Tips & Warnings

  • Anytime you want to change the settings in your Attack! application or in any other Facebook application, click "Edit" next to "Applications" under the search box in the left menu.

  • When playing Attack! on Facebook, pay attention to the player details. Their number of cards held is shown, as well as their number of remaining armies. These details--along with their win/lose history available by clicking their profile photos--can give you clues as to how to approach each player.

  • Don't forget to pray. Luck is a major part of this game (more major than some winners might care to admit).

  • Attack! is very addictive. Many people become addicted to the game (as with many other online games) often to the detriment of some other part of their lives. Do not let your real life go. Just play once in a while for a stimulating challenge and maybe a few laughs. If you develop an addiction, try to see it for what it is, do not deny it and stop.

  • The Attack! application contains a chat window. There you will see any number of abusive or disrespectful comments. Realize that some players are immature, quick to judge, or just plain annoying. Do not take it personally. They are not worth your attention.
