Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Finding the right surgeon is the most important aspect of successful treatment. When looking for a plastic surgeon in the United States, look for one who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He or she should have at least several years of experience in the sub-specialty of liposuction procedures and have completed basic educational requirements to do so.
Step2
Meet with your chosen surgeon for a consultation. This is a very important part of the liposuction or lipoplasty procedure, and provides an opportunity for a patient to ask questions regarding the procedure, what to expect, length of recuperation and what you're hoping to gain from the procedure. For your surgeon, it's the perfect opportunity to ask you about your medical history and whether or not you suffer from any medical conditions, allergies or other issues that might affect your surgery.
Step3
You will be expected to have a medical evaluation and undergo certain testing prior to your surgical procedure. If you smoke, you'll be asked to stop in advance of the procedure. In addition, patients are warned about the use of herbal supplements and remedies as well as the warnings about the use of aspirin prior to the treatment, as such use may cause an increase in bleeding.
Step4
Your plastic surgeon will explain where the procedure is to take place. In most cases, a general anesthetic is given, which means that you should have someone drive you to the procedure. For outpatient facilities, arrangements should be made to have someone drive you home as well. Liposuction is often performed in outpatient clinics, ambulatory surgery centers and office settings, as well as hospitals.
Step5
Results can be seen almost immediately. However, patients should discuss all risks and potential complications with their surgeon prior to the procedure. There are risks in any type of surgery, and that includes liposuction. Not everyone is a good candidate for liposuction or lipoplasty, so make sure to discuss these issues with your doctor.
